In a one-of-a-kind business like Aloka, every delivery carries the suspense of special surprise, the potential of particular that plucks us out of the ordinary. It's a transferable joy that continues to land at every stop along each quilt's journey to you. We experience it, too – that delight our clients and customers share in calls and messages. Ah, hold that thought. The truck is here.

The door rolls up and the boxes come in, it’s all we can do to not drop everything and dive. But like most special things, there is a process.
They arrive perfectly folded, a mystery to the beauty inside. As each piece is opened and examined closely, inspected for quality, the experience of renewal takes its next shape in our studio. Any areas that might need a patch or mending; score the overdyeing process; take size standard; the labor of love, too, takes shape-shifting license to be wowed yet again.
We learn, as the blankets go. Some to the studio table for mending. Others for pillow making. Another to be patterned as a jacket. The sifting presents its morsels, too – pieces of quilt we can cut for custom yardage. The feel is the touch that knows as the eye sees, dances. This one needs another wash to achieve the elusive softness. Nothing gets away.
We hear the collectors' call, a particular element of the special. The quiet of the warehouse becomes a great sorting pleasure, work as practice. Biceps! To explore this material over and over again, every time new, is to allow the beauty of imperfections to speak. And whisper: Diane will love this one. Behna is going to want that one. Jed must have this one. Saskia needs that one. It's the real power of the one-off, gob smacked by a design or color composition so unusual, not quite ready to be rushed out the door just yet. The Aloka Archive, held back to hang on the studio walls, to study and be inspired.
We're glad to share what we're doing - it mimics the feel clients convey so lovingly to us so often. The business of sincerity, obsession, dedication and wonder that connects us. That's Aloka– ever-emerging from dialogue between material, time, and each other until it speaks into your home.
