In recent years, garments made of antique quilts and vintage kanthas have made a splash in fashion on the runways at Bode and Sea New York. And increasingly, renowned interior designers like Frances Merrill of Reath Design use vintage quilts as staples in their projects for adding depth, dimension and a touch of the hand-made into homes.
Introducing the Mosaic Collection
At Aloka, we’re deep into on our own explorations of vintage hand-stitched kantha quilts, a journey that starts with procuring the most beautiful pieces we can find followed by a multi-step shampooing and softening processes to rejuvenate them. Over the years we began to experiment with natural dyes, stonewashing, and block prints, always cataloging the offcuts and remnants for patching and future projects. In the last six months our “play” utilizing these pieces intensified and we began to develop our own material. By assembling select vintage pieces anew and in our own designs, we established a fresh aesthetic and then applied that to our own furniture designs.
The Mosaic Collection is the thread of our ongoing conversation with vintage quilts and coverlets, exemplifying the ethos of creativity, beauty and sustainability central to the spirit of Aloka.
Each piece of the Mosaic Collection is made in our Athens, Georgia studio, a testament to the unique linkage of handwork and beauty. From the selection of patches to color pairing and design, we are forging distinct new direction that reinforces our love and commitment to the material.
